(APOLOGIES FOR OUR DEPLETED STOCK LISTINGS
WE ARE SELLING HEAPS IN OUR SALE AND WE

A WORD ABOUT OUR QUALITY ANTIQUE FURNITURE
(and please don't call it Brown Furniture to me!)

I am on a one woman campaign to kill off, once and for all,
the stupid and totally inaccurate term ‘Brown Furniture’
often used today (and by people who should know better) when
referring to dark timbered antique furniture.

This derogatory term was most likely started by high-end
antique dealers when describing the post World War II
furniture of the mid 20th century.
Because of the war, timber was in short supply so the
cabinet makers of the day often had to use whatever timber
they could get their hands on for the outside
of the furniture they were making and used masonite etc for
the sections like the back and the drawer sides and bases
and all the areas that didn’t matter as much.
They then put an opaque mahogany coloured brown stain all
over it to cover up any discrepancies’ in the timbers or
veneers to create a more uniform finish.
It was because of the almost brown painted effect from this
opaque stain that it was subsequently referred to as ‘Brown Furniture’.

In my opinion these guys did the best they could under the
circumstances and their furniture still turns up occasionally
to this day so it was sturdily madein reality did the job it
was built for and has stood the test of time to boot.

But now, somehow, this Brown Furniture nonsense term has been
attached to any piece of antique furniture that is made in a dark timber
– even for timbers like Cuban Mahogany, Australian Cedar
and Brazilian Rosewood.
Timbers that are now so rare that they are listed in the
Cites Act of 1975 for the Protection of Endangered Species
(just like elephant ivory & rhino horn)
and these magnificent examples of the Cabinet Makers
art are being sniffed at and referred to as ‘Brown Furniture’
It is totally bizarre.

Lets face it, no one would walk into someone’s house after they
had just paid a huge sum of money to have hardwood flooring laid
down and say,
“Love your Brown floors”
it just doesn’t make sense and neither does it when
referring to solid antique timber furniture.
