19TH CENTURY CHINESE LACQUER CHESS GAMES BOX

A fabulous example of Chinese gold gilded
lacquer ware from the late 1800s.

This is a Chess and Backgammon box that both
stores the pieces and folds out to become
the playing board too – interior is the backgammon
And the exterior is the chess board.

THERE ARE NO PIECES WITH THIS BOARD

Chinese lacquer ware is a very delicate substance
and as such it has suffered from time and use.
As shown the main damage is to the corners
and there are some bumps, lumps, chips and
gold wear in a few places.

All the decoration is hand painted is and is
incredibly intricate and skilfully done.
There are eight ‘cartouches’ around the edges
with varying scenes.
The details are so fine they must have been
done by a single hair brush.
The quality is superb and would be hard to
find a better example.
