MANLY ANTIQUE CENTRE

FRENCH 18TH CENTURY WALNUT ARMCHAIR
OS DE MOUTON FAUTEUIL

Something we don't get too often at Manly Antique Centre.
An 18th century Fauteuil or armchair in walnut c.1730!

It was purchased by the previous owner in 1989 from
Andre & Cecile Fink, dealers and importers of high-end French antiques
in the late 80s and early 90s with a store in Double Bay (of course).

We have a copy of the invoice from that time dated 14/8/89
which states:

18th C Walnut chair $5,200 from Chateau de Lovie

Chateau de Lovie is in Belgium and we presume it was purchased
directly from the Chateau or a sale of goods from this Chateau
to have this provenance on the invoice.

The chair was upholstered in 1989 in this lovely off-white fabric
which is in very good condition except for one small dark patch
of dirt on the left side of the back which should clean off.
I haven't tried but it doesn't look rubbed in so should be fine.

The official French term for one of these chairs is
OS DE MOUTON FAUTEUIL
which loosely translates to 'Sheep bone chair' as the stretchers
that join the front and back legs are shaped like rams horns.
Just a bit of trivia that I thought was worth sharing.

It measures 121cm high and 62cm wide.

It shows its great age in the walnut arms (see photos)
with lots of bumps and marks that just add to its 287 year old charms.

A gorgeous armchair that could tell a few tales I'm sure.
