We bought this incredible piece of history directly from the residence
of the Catholic priest attached to the Catholic church at Beauty Point (amongst other things)
We were told it belonged to the predecessor of the most recent inhabitant of this residence
who is the National Director of Catholic Mission for Australia
It was also mentioned at the time of purchase that the father had met the pope on several
occasions over the years and reportedly was considered a personal friend by His Holiness
After some research we found that the official number of meetings with John Paul II
at the Vatican was four
But then in 1988, visiting Rome purely as a tourist,
he met with the Pope to ‘pass on greetings from St Patrick’s College in Manly’
At this unofficial meeting The Pope reportedly recalled his visit to
Australia two years earlier ‘with great affection’
As a result of this meeting the father celebrated mass with the Pope the next day,
an honour that is strictly ‘invitation only’
Perhaps this is when he received this signed photograph as a memento of the great
honour done him by His Holiness on this memorable occasion
The frame measures approx. 32.5cm x 43cm and is in very good condition
The photograph has been framed under non-reflective glass
